Rating and/or Content Warnings: It's literally about sexual abuse. Also sexism.

Summary: An examination of sexual abuse at the Blue Heron Institute magic school and things that make people more vulnerable to being targeted by it through a series of case studies.

Reccer's Notes: Frankly, I expected this to be significantly more controversial when I wrote it, which is why I reached for such authoritative sources and deliberately limited the spread of the post. Instead, I got... a lot of agreement on the official fandom Discord and basically no comments? I'm considering if I want to repost it in other places like the fandom subreddit or tumblr, since I feel I did a good job with this.

Summary: Discussion of the elements of Yiyun Jen's character that feel inaccurate for a first generation Chinese Canadian immigrant.

Reccer's Notes: This is a self-rec for something I wrote. Mostly intended as a guide for people who wanted to write fic with this character, in the same vein of people asking what was up with Cho Chang's name in Harry Potter.

Summary:

The practice is the intersection of self, word, and pattern. Word is inviolate, and patterns have been a part of Naomi Cohen's life for as long as she can remember. Her Self, however, has reached a point of flux, and in that challenge risks collapse.

So obviously the solution is ignore the problem and hope it goes away. Naomi is a student of the past, after all.

And the one thing everyone knows about the past is that it has never, ever had even the slightest bearing on the present.

Reccer's Notes: Pass is the story of Naomi, a Jewish girl in a world of magic where she has been sent to Maine for an impending arranged marriage to the powerful Blanc family. But the Blancs didn't get to the top by being good people, and gaining their approval means compromising herself over and over again. Meanwhile, Naomi draws closer to Aria, the Other servant that the Blancs keep under their thumb...

This is an original character and location within a preexisting world, but should be understandable on its own without knowledge of Pale or Pact. Essentially a coming of age epic. It does a good job of integrating Jewish culture into urban fantasy

Summary:
When Lucy is under siege, Martinus stands with her, transforming into something that bristles as much as she cannot and raising all the points she keeps in her head. Strangers mutter about how often Martinus spends as a roaring lion or prickly hedgehog in public, but they don't see the way he spills over Lucy's lap as a prize bunny or prances to experimental music as a goat when alone.

A Lucy daemon AU.

Reccer's Notes: This is a collab I wrote for the fandom Pale, which is combined magical girl and urban fantasy. Canonically, Lucy ends up with a bad case of activist burnout that makes her feel that she is the only one able to fight when others cannot, which is influenced by how she is the only black girl in a rural Canadian town. My co-author and I decided to explore that for this character study.
